麦积山石窟，始创于十六国后秦（公元384年至417年）时期。因山体呈圆锥状酷似农家的麦垛而得名为麦积山。山峰的西南面为悬崖峭壁，在如此陡峻的悬崖上开凿成百上千的洞窟和佛像，在中国的石窟中是罕见的。麦积山石窟属全国重点文物保护单位，也是闻名世界的艺术宝库。
